SATA 규격을 관장하는 SATA-IO는 SATA 리비전 3.0(6Gbps) 규격을 공식 발표했다.
현재 널리 쓰이는 SATA 3Gbs 인터페이스에 비해 2배 높은 6Gbs 인터페이스를 지원해 높은 대역폭을 필요로 하는 데스크탑/노트북 PC 애플리케이션의 성능을 더욱 향상시킬 수 있다.
또한 동시다발적 데이터 입출력 명령의 효율적 처리를 위한 NCQ(Native Command Queuing) 기능을 개선해 전체적인 시스템 성능과 데이터 전송 속도를 높여주며, 향상 된 전력 관리 기능을 제공해 전력 효율성도 높였다.
SATA 6Gbps는 전 세대와 같은 케이블과 커넥터를 사용하므로 SATA 3Gbs 및 1.5Gbs 규격과 하위 호환 된다.
SATA 리비전 3.0의 개선 사항은 아래와 같다.
1. A new Native Command Queuing (NCQ) streaming command to enable isochronous data transfers for bandwidth-hungry audio and video applications 2. An NCQ Management feature that helps optimize performance by enabling host processing and management of outstanding NCQ commands
3. Improved power management capabilities
4. A small Low Insertion Force (LIF) connector for more compact 1.8-inch storage devices
5. A connector designed to accommodate 7mm optical disk drives for thinner and lighter notebooks
6. Alignment with the INCITS ATA8-ACS standard
